Don’t Move Where the Puck is, Move Where the Puck will be- DON’s Style

The quote in the title is attributed to the famous ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky, who is considered as the greatest hockey player of all time by many sportswriters. He holds a small number of 60 National Hockey League records (as of 2014), even though he retired in 1999. In the book, Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell makes an assertion that those individuals who attained legendary success in their vocation had a common link of having had to practice 10000 hours to hone their skills. This was consistent feature from Mozart, to the Beatles, to Bill Gates and certainly of those involved in professional sport of any kind. But is practice for a certain number of hours enough to achieve the superlative feats of a Michael Phelps or a Warren Buffett? What separates the good from the great and great from the legendary?

Enter the curious case of Sir Donald Bradman, a cricketer with a mindboggling batting average of 99.94 in Test Cricket. Why is this feat extraordinary? Because in roughly 140 years of professional cricket, the next best batsmen has an average close to 61. He is often touted as greatest sportsman of all time as the extent of his dominance and the longevity of his record is unique in all of sports. People have spent years trying to decode the secret to his success. But one aspect of his early training caught the eye of many. As a young boy, he invented a game in which he attempted to hit a golf ball with a cricket stump against a water tank in the yard at the back of the Bradman home. He wrote in his autobiography, Farewell to Cricket: “The golf ball came back at great speed and to hit it at all with the round stump was no easy task. This rather extraordinary and primitive idea was purely a matter of amusement, but looking back I can understand how it must have developed the co-ordination of brain, eye and muscle which was to serve me so well in important matches later on.”

In simple words, he had trained hundreds of hours playing a game much harder than cricket. The actual game was far easier for him than others.

But you will see this theme repeat itself in other geniuses too. Take Simone Biles for example. She has an air of effortless ease and nonchalance in her dazzling performances blending artistic beauty and athletic prowess in the grandest of stages and that disarming smile of pure joy she wears most of the time delights all. Great performances in sport and music or art have a way of creating a singularity in the time-space continuum. For a time, we are quiet and still within and everything appears just right even if there is noise all round, we live for such moments. But these great performances are built on the bedrock of blood, sweat and toil and most importantly intelligent practice. Simone Biles during routines at level higher with greater risk than what she performs in gymnastic competitions. Of course, she is way ahead of her competitors.

How can we apply, what we have just learned? Tweak your practice regimen. In any field, it is possible to make things harder. For example, if you are playing five-a side football, play five on four. But don’t make it too difficult that it is depressing. Don’t play five on one that will not get you anywhere. It is also important to enjoy the practice. Remember Don was just a kid having fun by himself alone in a field. And even though Simone Biles had to give up on her normal school life for home schooling to miss accommodate her practice regimen, she could do it because gymnastics was fun.

Choice is yours. Whether you want to be ordinary or extra-ordinary or legendary? You become what you place your focus on. You can choose to play at the same level as what is expected of you or play a game nobody has a chance of competing with you.

Don’t move where the puck is, Move where the puck will be.

Then may be one day, I get the privilege to write about you too, if I am up to it.

Every day is New Year’s Day, Every Night is Xmas Night

Mr. Floyd Bottomsup was teaching a history lesson  describing the accomplishments and adventures of Alexander the Great and his beloved horse Bucephalus to a class of 6th graders. Bottomsup  finishes the class stressing that if one has a dream and pursues it singlemindedly, each of the kids could achieve even greater things than Alexander and rewrite history. Next day,the teacher asked the kids if they had some questions about the previous lesson. One kid raises his hand and says that he rewrote history and he can show it his notebook. The teacher is pleasantly surprised calls him to come forth and show his notebook. The note reads:

Alexandria the Great was a teenage girl who rode a chocolate breathing Dragon. She used her dragon to fly around the world and produce magic sleeping gas from the dragon’s behind that puts the teachers to sleep. She fought for the freedom of kids to escape the boredom of the Classroom and play all day.

It was a tragic comedy or comic tragedy…Like LIFE.

Life is like La Choy SWEET and SOUR sauce….One cannot separate the COMEDY from the TRAGEDY or the SWEET from the SOUR. It is the same for everybody, whether you are Roger Federrer or Angela Merkel or the pizza delivery guy.

Yes, there are moments of inexpressible joy and happiness and then, there are periods of exasperating anguish and grief.  We all know how to handle the upward cycle of life. But how do we handle the downward cycle? By having the right perspective and not resisting the flow of life.

What is your age? Don’t answer that..What is the age of Universe?

13.8 billion years from current scientific estimates…that is 13800000000000 years

Where do we live?

08-28-11-hs-2014-27-a-xlarge_webImage from Hubble Space Telescope (bright spots represent galaxies)

Observable universe has about 1oo billion galaxies in the and our planet  is the 4th smallest planet of a very small solar system in the Milky Way Galaxy. Our sun is just one of the hundred billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

1oo billion is 100000000000…there are more stars in the Milky Way then the grains of sand on Earth

Even the staunchest sceptic cannot but marvel at the immensity of space and the boundlessness of time. For life on Earth to flourish a unique set of conditions had to be met such as suitable distance from the Sun  and the amount of dark energy (something akin to anti-gravity) in our Universe  had to be of appropriate levels so that the Universe does not collapse within itself. If this does not sound like a miracle, I give you another example.

You…Your presence on Earth started with the perilous journey of about 300 million sperms of which finally only one sperm is able to fuse with the mother’s egg. The genetic information from these two cells is responsible for your uniqueness in the cosmos. The fascinating and mindboggling transformation of two cells to form into a human being with functional organs of ever increasing complexity such as brain, lungs and heart in 40 weeks is miracle as jaw-dropping as the Milky Way Galaxy. Just consider the brain which has a network of 100 billion neurons relaying information  at speeds of 270 miles per hour.

In Hindu mythology, Gods are described as merely rulers of one cycle of existence. Even Gods have to be born on Earth, to seek enlightenment and freedom. A human life is precious and valuable for we are as Gods born on Earth. We might be flawed Gods and we may fall due to our fears, greed and lust. No one is lost for ever. We have the potential to achieve greatness and handle the trials and tribulations of life with grace and poise. We come from the same stuff as stardust, black holes and supernovas. We come from infinity and go back to that infinity when our lives come to an end. Remember this next time you are down and out.

But lets not forget that human life is fragile. Our life can be snuffed out as easily as the light of a candle. Steve Jobs used to ask himself this question everyday:

“If today was the last day of my life, would I be doing what I am about to do today”.

Death can become a gift if we make it our best friend. Death is life’s transforming agent, a benediction in disguise.Acknowledging our own impermanence everyday will give us the strength to finally shed away our fears, prejudices and all narrow views like a snake casts off its skins. We, then become truly capable of following our higher calling and use our time wisely and cherish and treasure the relationships we are gifted with.

Then, indeed everyday is New Year’s day and every night is Christmas night. We all have a lot to be  grateful for the gift of one more day and experience the mystery and chaos of the macrocosm and microcosm.

ALL is FAIR in LUST and WAR: Random musings of a GoT FAN

If I had to challenge myself and try to sum up the complex world represented by Game of Thrones (GoT): People driven by their deepest desires take actions, which lead to their ultimate glory or ruin. In his own words, author George R.R Martin (GRRM) the mantra that drives his writings is the “STRUGGLE of the HUMAN HEART in CONFLICT WITH ITSELF”. What people do or fail to do to win this struggle, leads to a complex interconnected web of events often having far reaching consequences far beyond their imagination. It is also a tale of how politics works and how people are consumed by the very power they seek so fanatically. Power corrupts but absolute power truly corrupts. Everything else in the tale, the dragons, the White Walkers, the magic and the wildfires are mere props in the tale to describe the human drama in the setting of a medieval soap opera.

The realism of the world GRRM has created and its parallelisms to our present day world is staggering. People are rarely painted as completely good or evil; rather almost everybody exhibits shades of both. For example, a man pushes a child from a tower to protect his family. Yet the same man, Jamie Lannister, kills the king he swore to protect to save the lives of millions, dishonoring himself for the rest of his life. The characters that GRRM has introduced are so vivid and so realistic. People hate to love a Cersei or Ramsay and girls world over fall head over heels for Prince Oberyn or Khal Drogo. Who doesn’t love an Arya or a Tyrion? Break all conventions and Be yourself, that’s Arya for you. That is the secret yearning of all. Freedom is the soul’s sacred thirst for normalcy. Tyrion is a tortured soul, twisted and wicked and maybe that’s why he has compassion to outcasts and the disadvantaged for he understands their suffering firsthand. Tyrion tells Jon Snow: “Let me give you some advice bastard. Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.” He is the only one to be a true friend to Jon and tells him the truth about the hard life of the Night’s Watch. He is humorously witty, openly offensive and has the street smarts to evade tricky and dangerous situations. He is also intriguingly modern in his worldviews. For example he is one of the few characters to treat women not as better or special but as an equal to man.

Buddha taught us not to be unattached to anything. Yet nothing could prepare us for the world famous bloodlust of GRRM. Just when you fall in love with a character and are routing for him or her, they are doomed. GRRM is a wrathful god, who kills his creations indiscriminately. You also wonder how such a sweet guy, could write scenes depicting such grotesque and violent deaths or scenes of appalling sexual violence. When I see him in the interviews, he looks to me like he could be Santa Claus or Gandalf. Exactly the kind of guy you want in your corner when you are in a really dark place like when you pissed of your girlfriend and could really use some magic to save your ass. But GRRM does do literary magic, he first shows the foibles of human nature and the inequalities that arise there of, like few other authors can manage. On the other hand, his work is also a hidden commentary of how a more equal, just and humane world would look like. We are in general violent creatures not all of us, not all the time but we are. We are cruel to each other and to ourselves, as history would attest. As for the sexual violence towards women depicted in GoT, women have been treated as second-class citizens in most of our history, even more so in medieval times. GRRM’s portrayal of the medieval times is more realistic than fantasy. On the other hand some of the strongest protagonists of the story are women (Cersei, Catelyn, Danaeyrs). He goes further to give so much power and influence to the disadvantaged such as crippled (Bran) and the socially rejected (Tyrion, Jon). GRRM is a peace lover (he was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam war). I suspect the end game of GoT, will be about how peaceful dialogue and non-violence are superior to war to restore balance and peace in the world.

How does one play the GoT? Only GRRM knows. But I am going to brave here and try to surmise how one can play anyway. One has to be strong, flexible to handle chaos and willing to learn on the go and evolve continually. One must be willing to take counsel when one is lacking knowledge in an area like Dany does. One must not be afraid to get one’s hands dirty sometimes. Angela Merkel may not like Tayyip Erdogan’s domestic policies but she needs to compromise and look in the other direction to keep the refugee deal with Turkey in place. Above all one must be able to trust one’s inner voice or intuition to make choices, which nobody else is willing to make. Sometimes you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. As President Obama once mentioned in an interview, oftentimes if an issue comes to his desk, it is something no body wants to handle. He has to make these decisions, which could affect millions with only incomplete information to guide him. It is not an easy job to fill the shoes of a Putin or a Theresa May.

The key to succeeding in GoT lies in understanding the differences in the leadership qualities of the Starks vs the Lannisters. Yes, the Lannisters are wicked but they are also smart, devious and calculating. The Starks are noble and they lead by example and are exemplary military strategists but they overtly cling to their honor. A motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough people get what they want.“ The Lannisters turn this principle around by figuring out what is your weakness, and how they can buy your loyalty for their ulterior motives. One famous example: Red Wedding, Walter Frey, and Tywin Lannister. Of course, it helps that the Lannisters have spies, which keeps them ahead of everybody, as they know the moves of their opponents in advance. In politics, one must be willing to play chess with people and figure how you can get what you want while helping them get what they want.

Consider for a moment, Jon Snow’s inability to convince the Night’s Watch to accept the wildlings to live on their side of the wall. In the eyes of the Night’s Watch, the wildlings were terrorists that they had sworn to kill and protect the people of Westeros for millennia. People don’t often care what about the right thing or the ultimate good, especially when they are in large crowds. They rather want to know what is in it for them and your job is to direct their attention towards that. Otherwise a Brexit or a Trump presidency could ensue. As a leader you have to from time to time get down from your high horse and speak in the language of the people. How would a Tyrion have handled such a situation? First, he would have made a snide comment about how he wants to kill every wildling just like the majority of the brothers of the Night’s Watch. Then he would have described a vivid picture about the events of Hardhome, about how powerful the White Walkers are and how they could reanimate dead people and add them to their ever-growing army. Tyrion would have further made every member of the Night’s Watch who witnessed the events of Hardhome firsthand to describe their version of events to further drive home the imminent danger for Westeros. This would have convinced the Night’s Watch that they need all the help they can get, even from the wildings to have a fighting chance to defeat the army of the Dead.

The downfall of the Starks lay in their clinging to their honor and not being flexible to adapt to the difficult situations they find themselves in GoT. There is nothing honorable to die in the hands of the wicked Cersei (Eddard Stark) or at the hands of rash and unwise brothers of the Night’s Watch (Jon Snow). At least the latter had the excuse of being young and inexperienced. The former is a fool to threaten the most powerful women in Westeros (Cersei) and her children. He is in an environment surrounded by the spies and loyalists of the Lannisters and has no plans on how to execute the threat or how to save his family. Excessive clinging to anything leads to one’s ruin. In this regard, the Starks lust to cling to honor at any cost is not very different from lust for sex (Jamie) or for power (Cersei). Furthermore, when vipers and chameleons surround a person, one must be willing to adapt and camouflage oneself to survive. In this game you win or die and when you die your sons and wife can be killed and your daughters raped. A duty of a ruler is to protect the weak and the vulnerable from the wicked and one must be willing to do whatever is needed to get the job done. ALL is FAIR to WIN this GAME.

(I write only as watcher of the show GoT and the reader of book 1 of the series A Song of Fire and Ice and therefore, my opinions could be different from the Book readers.)

DHONI- The monk who does not have to sell his Ferrari

Dhoni

I thought of several titles to describe Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Zen master, Fire fighter, Tight rope walker, Deadly Finisher, Captain Cool. But I realized the most defining quality of Dhoni is his ability to be still and calm in the midst of chaos and imminent risk and high-pressure situations. It is far easier to remain at peace in a forest meditating alone, than to drive a Ferrari in full speed with a knife waiting to behead you everytime you fail the expectations of a billions cricket loving souls. Yet that is Dhoni’s unenviable job everyday.

For a 90s kid like myself, the first fond memories of Indian cricket, was Sachin’s dance pummeling Australia to smithereens in the Desert Storm of Sharjah. While the Indian teams of that period and early 2000s, were good, they could never win big tournaments and would often fail in high-pressure situations like knockouts and it was deeply disappointing to kids like me. We lacked the cold-blooded instincts and nerves of steel needed to finish games and the belief that we could win major tournaments. Then, came Dhoni to Indian cricket and players responded favorably to this guy. His calm demeanor and the attitude of keeping it simple outside the field and un-orthodox methods of Dhoni on the field seem to work like magic. Suddenly, we were travelling better atleast in limited over’s cricket, winning for example CB tri-lateral series defeating Australia in Australia. What followed next was India going on to be contender for every major ICC trophy and bilateral series. India held the No.1 Test ranking for 18 months starting December 2009, won the World Twenty20 in 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the ICC champions trophy 2013 under Dhoni’s leadership. How did Dhoni pull off this remarkable turnaround for Indian Cricket?

Intuition. It quite often that people call Dhoni lucky, whenever his moves on the field have worked like a charm. But those are not happy accidents. Intuition is indeed spontaneous but it is built on knowledge gained by careful observation of cricketing situations throughout one’s life. Which means you are never switched off or daydreaming, when you are in the cricket field or during practice or watching a game, you pay attention to everything. How the pitch is changing in the course of the game, body language of players, opponents and your teams strengths and weaknesses. All this data is stored in your brain supercomputer and when a particular situation arises and you are calm and mentally quiet, you receive the answer as an inspiration to the problem effortlessly. Doesn’t mean all solutions will work all the time, but this how intuition comes in handy to Dhoni.

Management. This job of a Captain is probably harder than even having to make cricketing decisions. Imagine having to handle an emotional player like Sreeshanth. Dhoni’s approach has always been to take a back seat and let his players express themselves in their own way. This was very important considering he also had to captain senior players who had played international cricket for far longer than himself. Dhoni also backs his players even if they fail several times, giving them sufficient time to develop. This of course paid great dividends sometimes, like Ravinder Jadeja, who is probably one of the most consistent spinners in world cricket across various formats now. However, in my personal opinion he has given too many chances to some undeserving players and left out others. Dhoni is extremely flexible on the field but can be stubborn out of it. Knowing exactly what words of encouragement each player needs is also hallmark of Dhoni’s captaincy. Only recently in the match against Bangladesh in World T20, we saw how brilliantly he helped a young Bumrah, turn it around in the last two overs after a horrid time in the initial part of the game and telling Hardik Pandya to play with freedom and do what came naturally to him before the last ball was typical Dhoni. He has had to endure average bowlers for most of his Captaincy period. And yet there are few captains who could squeeze the most of what each player had to offer like Dhoni does routinely. Who else could have made national heroes of a Joginder Sharma and a Hardik Pandya?

Situational awareness. There is no one with more street-smarts atleast in modern day cricket than Dhoni. Who can forget the Jhonty Rhodes like run out manufactured all by himself in the Bangladesh game just the other day? This is only possible if one is completely in the present moment and thinking what the situation needs rather than what you are expected to do normally.

Calm in the Storm. Dhoni takes all the pressure on himself and also lets his players play their natural game. When the stakes are high, he takes the responsibility upon himself like during Worldcup Finals 2011; he promotes himself up the order to see the game through to the end. In victory, he gives credit completely to his teammates and even stands in a corner during the victory photoshoot, letting the youngsters get the limelight. In failure, he takes all the blame. His calmness not only makes his team confident and nerveless but scares the opponents. His philosophy during batting chases, expressed in his own words “Take the game to a point where the opponent is more afraid of defeat than yourself” and then unleash the dragon and crush them. Most often the thought of bowling to Dhoni in the death overs is a scary proposition for opposition teams. What can you bowl to a guy who can dispatch yorkers or bouncers out of the stadium at will?

Dhoni’s greatest teaching to all of us is to stay in the moment. The point of life is not to win or avoid defeat but keeping your eye on the ball, the present moment. If you can do that and remain still and calm being aware that victory will probably follow defeat at some point and vice versa, one can conquer life itself. The lessons learnt from failure and disappointments can then help lay the foundation of much greater present and future. No matter how tense the situation or how high the stakes one can be calm and handle it like Dhoni. What is possible for one is possible for others.

Gary Kirsten once said that he would go to war with Dhoni by his side. That is kind of trustworthy and self-sacrificing leader that Dhoni is, who leads by example rather than empty words. Even if Dhoni let himself be shot by the opponent, that would merely be a strategy to fool or divert them and pull the advantage back for his team. If I wanted to defend my fortress, I would have a Rahul Dravid lead the charge and if I wanted to conquer a fortress, I would use a Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar. But if my fortress was already breached, I would trust nobody but Dhoni. Very few men can wriggle me out of danger by making a strategy in the spur of the moment from his mind palace and then have the audacity to pull it off amidst the chaos and confusion of war as Dhoni possibly could.

PS: Like all great men Dhoni had faults too, but have intentionally avoided them for this article. This was written with the sole purpose to express what we can all learn from the genius of Dhoni. Ganguly’s contribution to Indian cricket must not be forgotten. That Dhoni stood on the shoulders of Ganguly is beyond doubt of any avid cricket follower.

Women, their superpowers and gifts to the world

International-Womens-Day1

First superpower: Motherhood. This puts women in a higher pedestal than men hand hands down. Let us look at a simple situation. I have flu, a foreign organism is trying to invade my system and my body fights back. My body suffers, I feel weak but the symptoms and time period of my illness is short. Now when I entered my mothers womb, I started growing, thriving and sapping her of her energy and nutrients. Of course the pregnancy journey would have been joyous when it is the result of consummation of love. But the mental, emotional and physical toll on mothers for nine whole months must have been very difficult to handle. The excruciating pain during labor and childbirth is visible from the trembling hands and terror filled eyes of the father of the child holding the mothers hand. We men can never fully comprehend what a woman goes through during pregnancy and childbirth.  We are grateful for what you do. But that is only beginning of a mother’s job. Mothers are the first institution we were enrolled into and mothers play a huge role in molding the character and habits of young impressionable minds. It’s a 24 by 7, 365 day job with no sick leave and work during vacation time too. It is only in the last 100 years that men have at least partly taken responsibility in the nurturing of children. Women have been therefore been directly responsible for the shaping the history of the world.

Second superpower: Backbone of the success of men. All great scientists, leaders, businessmen have the backing of some extraordinary woman either as a mother or as a wife, who provides the emotional balance at home and support necessary to achieve greatness in work. Two of the most successful commanders of all time, Alexander the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte were greatly influenced by their mothers. Alexander grew up hearing from his mother that he was greater than normal men and that he was going to conquer the world and Napoleon’s mother never taught him to be afraid of anything. In our own time, listen to what Barack Obama has to tell about his wife’s contribution to his life: “Obviously I couldn’t have done anything that I’ve done without Michelle. . . . not only has she been a great first lady, she is just my rock. I count on her in so many ways every single day.” Despite these influences, the notion that a woman’s primary role is to make babies and take care of them is still prevailing in many parts of the world. This medieval thought has to be uprooted from humanity’s consciousness.

Gift1: Beauty and grace. For sure beauty is only skin deep and at least physical beauty is fading with time. For example, no body could look at Mila Kunis, Priyanka Chopra or Keira Knightly without skin, could we? Yet men fall everyday since eons to natural grace, dignity and beauty of woman. So many songs and poetry would have been lost to the world if not for women. Everywhere in the world many a song is based on a man expressing or celebrating his love for a woman. Let us not forget that crucial to plotline of two of the greatest epics created by humanity Odyssey and Ramayana depend on a man desiring someone else’s wife mesmerized by her beauty. Thank you for great literature too.

Gift2: Great Philosophy. Nobody knows how many men philosophers have been created by unrequited love or separation from their ladylove by break up or death. If this sounds funny or farfetched, let me just give you a prominent example. The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri describes the soul’s journey towards God through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise and also describes God and the seven deadly sins. This work is regarded as one of the most inspired works ever penned by man. A major inspiration for Dante was a Florentine woman whom he had met in childhood and admired from afar in the mode of the then fashionable courtly love tradition. But she married someone else and died at a young age of 24. Regardless, Dante held her in high esteem and even though he was married to another woman, he included Beatrice in the last part of Divine Comedy and describing her as his salvation because according to him she was a paragon of virtue and purity.

Gift3: Contributing to world economy and alleviating hunger. If women didn’t love shopping imagine how many industries will close down? How many malls will have to shut down? How many people will lose jobs and how many children will go hungry? Thank you for shopping to your heart’s content and making the world a better place.

Gift4: Making the world a livelier place to live. It is true on average women speak more words than men. That is only because we men are focused listening and meditating on the inner meaning of your words. True story. But anyways thank you to women and children for making the world livelier and colorful with your voices.

While I have only listed women in supportive roles, that is not the whole story. History of the world, is also of Joan of Arcs’ and Jhansi Rhanis’ and of Marie Curies’ and the Rosalind Franklins’, who had to fight against tough odds in a male dominated world to come out on top. Increasingly CEOs, COOs and CFOs of many multinational companies are women nowadays. Working moms of today have much more difficult schedules and choices to make than President Obama. But if I were to describe all the contributions of women in this article, we would already reach the next International Women’s’ Day.

Only a world, where the masculine and feminine aspects of humanity are treated equal will be harmonious and progressive. It is the duty of every man and woman to work towards this, if we want our future generations to inherit a better world than ours. Thank you to all the women in my life. Love you all. Happy International Women’s day.

Captain Jack Sparrow

Captain_Jack

What comes to your mind when you think of Jack Sparrow? suave, adventurous, reckless genius, master manipulator, pompous, narcissistic, eloquent, a phoenix and an outlaw in every imaginable way.

Like every story worth telling, Jack’s story is a love story. But this love is not for a woman or gold or power. In his own words, the unbounded sea is his first love and his beloved ship the Black Pearl his second love. However, both are just means to an end. What Jack truly yearns for is freedom. Freedom is the soul’s sacred thirst for normalcy. You can bind Calypso in a human form and bind her to her bones but she will eventually break free. As Jack tells Elizabeth, “It’s not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails that’s what a ship needs but what a ship is…What the Black Pearl really is…is freedom.” Neither the rum nor the salty wenches (women) nor the plundered treasures could satisfy him, they were merely trifling distractions at best. Only the freedom of a pirate to go on adventures and explore the mysteries that abound the limitless ocean could sate him. That’s the universal charm of Jack; he gets to do what he wants most. But of course, to have what you want most, a price must have to be paid. Jack had to wade through a mutiny, being stuck in Davy Jones locker for god knows how long, being marooned in a god forsaken spit of land twice, betrayal of his friends like Elizabeth, being eaten by a Kraken and what not. But he could endure all, brave all, because he knew exactly what he wanted and he was willing to go any lengths to get it. And he did of course rise from ashes again and again, to regain his life and freedom to sail the seas as a legendary pirate.

Jack always introduces himself as Captain Jack Sparrow and even in times when he has no ship or a crew. He walks, talks and acts the part of being Captain of a ship. This can be seen as narcissism or his immense faith in himself to regain his lost ship and his ability to procure a crew. Both of which, comes true in the course of time. Jack also pays great attention to his appearance and his effects, especially his hat, to distinguish himself among the pirates.

Among his effects Jack’s compass deserves special mention, the one that does not point north, but rather towards the thing that the person holding the compass wants most. At a certain level, it seems that all you need know is the name of what you want and the compass will guide you to it. It helps that Jack almost always knows what he exactly wants to achieve his aims. It would have been useless in the hands of one, who cannot make up his mind. No one who achieved anything great ever knew all the steps to get there; they just knew they were going to do it. But he even the legendary Jack Sparrow does get lost at times. Davy Jones chases Jack, to claim Jack’s pending debt; hundred years of servitude aboard the Dutchman. For quite some time Jack loses his mind, not knowing what he needs to do get out of this troubling situation and his compass cannot help him.  A quiet mind free of fear and doubt and in alignment with one’s heart is quintessential to lead us to the object of our life.

To classify, Jack as a good or a bad man morally is to oversimplify the truth. Like most people his character is neither black nor white but rather shades of the grey. For a pirate, who thieves, plunders, impersonates, deceives woman and lives by the dictum “Take everything, give nothing back”, he is oddly altruistic. He prefers non-violent solutions and tries to avoid killing those who did not specifically wish him harm. He twice sacrifices an opportunity to achieve immortality, to save his friends Will Turner and Anjelica. He showed his loyalty to his crew, by going back to the Black Pearl to fight the Kraken alongside them, even though he first chose to flee alone in a dinghy. He even feels remorse for breaking Anjelica’s heart and setting her on the path of piracy. Jack clearly like all of us, struggles with his own good and bad sides. Jack is able to put his self-interests behind and chooses to help the innocent and his friends in moments of great peril. Though, he fails miserably to do the same at other times. In my opinion, a strong evil is better than a weak goodness. The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis (Dante’s Inferno).  While the weak man goes nowhere, the strong falls and fails but one can only fall so much. One hits the ground and then, there is only one way, upwards. Jesus and Judas (Ram and Ravan) are in the same person, what matters ultimately is what we chose to act upon. I would consider Jack, a pirate with a moral compass, that’s saying something.

Any discussion about Jack, without a word about his mercurial genius, often bordering on insanity is incomplete. There is meaning to that madness. Sometimes to find a place that cannot be found, one has to get lost for certain. Whether it is the thrilling escapades engineered extemporaneously or his use of guile and confounding wordplay to outmaneuver his enemies, Jack knows his business. He was an expert swordsman and a good shot and was no pushover in a battle. Yet he never goes into a fight unless he has no other alternative and almost always finds a shortcut out of tough situations leaving everyone baffled with his intelligence and quick wit. He also had an unusual understanding of human nature. For example, he uses Lord Beckett’s greed for power and control for the seven seas or Will’s passionate love for Elizabeth, manipulating them for his purposes. However, some of his dealings do leave him in a quandary, whether it is the right way. Some are of the opinion, the means justify the ends. But one has to live with the choices one makes for the rest of his/her life. Captain Teague, Jack’s father advises Jack, “It’s not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is still living with yourself forever”.

In conclusion, regardless of the external complexity of Jack’s character and the ups and downs of his adventurous life, Jack is rather simple. Only one thing matters to him. Freedom, Freedom and Freedom. And he is willing to go any extent and to have it, even if it means he has to dance with dragons. Although, he would prefer to drug the dragon or divert it rather than face it head on. I leave you with a few questions.

What is the thing that you want most on all Earth? What is so precious to you that you are willing to pillage, plunder and cross the seas to have it? Would you rather be the heart of the party or stand by the side and wonder why is the rum always gone?

Why RMS Titanic sank?

titanic-sinking

Human hubris and ego. There is nothing else need be said on this. Why is a full article devoted to discuss this further? The aim is to relate the sinking of the Titanic and how it parallels the sinking of many a relationSHIP whether it be with our friends, colleagues or with our loved ones.

The days before the said event, ice warnings were relayed to the ship operators by radio. The ship, however, continued to steam at full speed, as was the common practice of those times. This great tragedy cannot be attributed just to the mistake of one man, the captain or even the crew. Despite the threat of icebergs, there had been no major accidents. For example, even when a German ship had once collided with an iceberg, it was still able to reach its destination albeit some difficulty. The captain and the crew did only what anyone in their shoes would have done in a similar situation. The fault lies in humans thinking that the engineering and technology and the maritime rules and regulations of the day were foolproof. It was not apparent to us that we were swimming in an infinite ocean run by Mother Nature, who is far more powerful than we will ever be. The classic case of human pride and ego causing our downfall. However, the event led to better safety regulations and rules, which has since made travelling by ship quite safe.

Human relationships run by the demonic ego will also end up sinking. But before we can enter a relationship or friendship, we have to love ourselves. Self love is the starting point. To accept ourselves as we are, with all our faults, imperfections, quirks is self love. I only state this because it is far easier to love what you deem desirable in you. Without this it is not possible to love another. It is like a beggar trying to loan some money to another. However, the problem begins when there is excessive self love.

No one ever owes you anything. When one carries ones relationship and friendship, with a feeling that everyone owes you something, there is a point when your bubble will burst. I am taking about “I did that for you , so you have to do this for me” attitude. That is the most natural way we all think. What is wrong with such an attitude?

In the book “The Go Giver”, the authors write that 50/50 is a losing proposition. Because at some point, your bucket of receiving will become empty, if you try to fill in to others only as much as you receive. The only way is to go 100 percent and give without expecting anything in return. At first, this looks crazy, yet it is the most natural thing to do. When you ensure that others bucket is always full, people will fill your bucket without you even asking for it. When you realize that you’re a king (or a queen) not a beggar, all your relationships will be deeply fulfilling. When you turn from, what you can receive, to what you can give, you realize how much love you are capable of feeling and receiving. Your ego wants to limit you, turn yourself against yourself, turn yourself against others. But it is false entity. Know that you are King of Kings or Queen of Queens.

How does love without ego look like? Let me tell you about a real king then you will know. People attribute many miracles he performed. Walking on water, turning water into wine, healing sick and troubled souls. But let me tell you a miracle, which no one can deny. Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples and was about to be crucified for mistakes he hadn’t committed, for laws he hadn’t broken. At that moment of great agony and pain, when all had forsaken him, he says, “Forgive them lord, for they know not what they do”. What an all encompassing love is this ?

Forgiveness is love. While such self-effacement of ego, may not be possible for us. In relation to how much we depress the ego, greater will be the joy we will experience. Love is letting yourself become vulnerable. Because in accepting your vulnerability, we realize our true invulnerability says the great teacher Echkart Tolle.

Love is freedom and complete independence not bondage. Love is giving people the space to be themselves. Love is caring but not too much as to stifle or choke them. Love is knowing, when to hold on and when to let go. Love is certainly not judging but yet saying what needs be said, however harsh it may seem. Love is to give everything, expect nothing back. Love is light, patient and forbearing. Love is failing happily, so that someone else is happy. Love starts with duality. I love you. It ends in Unity. There is no I, no you, only Love, Love, Love.

When love marries ego there can be no real happiness. A clever person will not leave the shade of the trees and stand in the scorching hot sun. May be avoid the scorching heat of the ego and enjoy perennial bliss of love.

How to become a genius at work?

Bruce Lee - Flames - wallpaper

When you see a world class dancer or musician performing, a world class sportswoman producing a stunning shot at the last minute of the game? What do you think is common in these situations? Yes, they manifest genius in their work. Yes, what they produce seems incredulous or even miraculous to us. Yet, all they do is to bring their total awareness to their work in that moment. They just bring a meditative quality to their work. If for example, they are playing music, they become one with the music world. They become the player of the music, the music that goes out and also the listener of the music. This being the final stage of genius, there are several levels before that. Before, we learn about them, let us understand the impediments that could block us on this path.

In the Mahabharata, Dhronacharya was the royal teacher of the Kauravas and Pandavas. During a lesson of archery, the task was to hit the eye of the bird perched upon a tree. The teacher was standing beside the pupils and asking them what they saw, as they took aim. Some said they saw the wings of the bird, some said the leaves of the trees, others that they saw the sky beyond and the teacher was listening intently. Finally, it was the turn of Arjuna. He replied that he saw the eye of the bird and nothing else and of course, he hit the target. Metaphorically, the distractions that the other people saw could in the context of work relate to the pain, mistakes and memories of the past and the glories that await us in the future. Like Arjuna, we must quell all these distractions and focus solely only on the work at hand. Nothing else must be entertained in the mind’s eye. But that does not mean we must not recall the past events or think of the future but not while we are engaged in work. To further illustrate the point, I would like to put forth a quote by Rafael Nadal, the great tennis player “What I battle hardest to do in a tennis match is to quiet the voices in my head , to shut everything out of my mind but the contest itself and concentrate every atom of my being on the point I am playing. If I made a mistake on a previous point, forget it; should a thought of victory suggest itself, crush it.”

Now, let us discuss about the levels of concentration possible. James Allen beautifully describes that there are four levels: attention, contemplation, abstraction and activity of repose. In the first two levels, results are achieved but there is some friction associated with the work and the mind and work are not united. In the third stage, the senses are oblivious to the outside world and the mind is solely centered on the work. In the final stage, called activity in repose the greatest work is accomplished with minimum friction. In this final stage, there is complete marriage of the activities of the mind with the work performed. All men of genius and originality are men of abstraction and all the masters and leaders reach the final stage of concentration, activity in repose.

How do we get there? First thing, is to be aware that there are higher levels of concentration that we can aspire towards. We must practice day in and day out to raise the level of attention we apply to our work. But not in a forceful way but in a calm, imperturbable way. We must march on taking stock of the progress we make and not be disappointed when we don’t make progress. The goal we aspire for is so great that it is worth the wait.

Finally, to conclude I would like to finish with a quote by Bruce Lee. It not only sums up all that I wrote in this article but points to us that all Masters reach out to the same goal. To merge completely with their work.

“ A good martial artist does not become tense but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Ready for whatever may come. When the opponent expands, I contract and when he contracts I expand. And when there is an opportunity, “I” do not hit, “it” hits all by itself.”

Why is the Buddha smiling ?

smilbudd

Our lives are filled with events and experiences. Some of these  bring us happiness and some sadness. There are periods of great turmoil, cycles of success, cycles of failure, periods of illness, periods of great vitality and excitement. Then there are events of great joy such as birth of a child or realization of a life long cherished dream. There are also dreams, which never get realized in our lifetime. We are tossed up and down in this sea of mundane existence. Yet the Buddha, who witnesses these same events, has a serene and beatific smile on his face at all times. Why is this so?

In a Buddha, the ego is completely annihilated. This false identity, the ego fools you into thinking that you are this fragile and puny body or the ever-oscillating monkey mind. The ego exaggerates the events in our life. If your husband or child dies or if a life-threatening disease like Cancer inflicts you, this event becomes the prism through which you view everything else in your life. Are we just a parent or a spouse or this body with a certain health condition? But ego likes to keep us small and loves to bind ourselves to misery. The truth is there are infinite aspects to our life and our real nature.

The Buddha lives in the here and now. You can live in London, Paris or Coimbatore. But all your life, the past and the future and all events happen in the ever present here and now. But our minds often take us either to past miseries or future glories, negating the most significant miraculous gift- here and now. The Buddha smiles because the possibilities and the beauty that the present moment holds thrill her. She tears up on the sight of a beautiful flower or the smile of a child. She is totally present to enjoy the glory of the present moment. So be present in the -here and now.

The Buddha lets go and doesn’t cling to anything. The Buddha knows that everything is impermanent. He knows that his children, wife, success, and social status everything will go one day. All things that have a form must die and wither away. This knowledge is deeply rooted in him and therefore, he doesn’t suffer. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t strive to achieve in life or that he doesn’t marry or have kids. He is detached towards all things and situations and can handle whatever comes his way in life with grace.

The Buddha does her work with great joy and lightness. There is no stress or tension involved. She does the best she can at each moment, holding the attention to only that moment. She is never in a hurry and is poised and relaxed in her actions. She is not greatly attached to the result of her actions. When you see a Buddha working, you will find that she dissolves into her work and is completely one with it. There is ease, grace and lightness in each of her actions. The work fills her with pure bliss.

The Buddha loves one and all. But this love doesn’t come from what religion propounds or from a belief fed to him by his ancestors or community. He can perceive a connection with all that is. To him oneness is a truth of his being. So he rejoices in the victory of others, as their victory is also his. He is saddened by their misfortunes. But his sadness is only because of his compassion to his fellow men. He is saddened that they are not yet free like him. He strives to free all and is willing to go any length to serve others. He manifests God on earth through his unselfishness and pure love.

The Buddha faces death fearlessly. To the Buddha, the knowledge that she is mortal is never forgotten. Having meditated on her own death, she sees it merely as just another door she has to walk through. She sees it as a benediction and a great adventure she has yet to experience. Death doesn’t make her tremble. She neither tries to avoid  or seek it. As calm as she faced life, she faces death and walks into it through the door of love and pure awreness. Having conquered both death and life, she is eternally free.

So the Buddha smiles. The symbol of the Buddha smiling is very powerful. It is also a symbol, which tells us that we can follow him. What is possible for one is possible for all. By regularly, mediating on his smile and let us ask ourselves why he is smiling. Let the ever graceful and compassionate master lead us to right knowledge and light and free us from the chains of darkness and ignorance which are mere illusions. Peace be to all.
